Aberystwyth is the cultural capital of Wales, a vibrant, cosmopolitan University town – ‘a natural crucible of colliding worlds’. The wide promenade, fronted by tall, elegant, Victorian and Edwardian buildings protects the town from the ravages of the Irish Sea and offers space to stroll, sit and soak up the sun. There is an excellent theatre, galleries and numerous restaurants cafes, pubs and shops in Aberystwyth, it’s an ideal base for exploring the area. Every local town and coastal village in Cardigan Bay has its own unique charm and character, none more than Newquay, which lies on the coast south of Aberaeron and is renown for its colourful terraced houses which tumble down the hillside to the sea. Newquay is widely believed to be the setting of Dylan Thomas' 'Under Milk Wood'. It is a vibrant holiday resort and has become famous for its wild dolphins, which are often spotted off the pier.
The Cardigan Bay coastline is dotted with picturesque fishing villages and small coves and harbours and inland you will find many traditional villages nestling in the rolling hills and uplands. The Welsh language is still the first language of the majority of the population of rural Ceredigion.
